Waterford faced Cork at home in Round 5 of the All-Ireland U23 Camogie Championship on Saturday, 21st June at De La Salle Cleaboy, with throw-in at 2.00pm. Cork came into the game as clear favourites, having won all three of their previous matches.
The visitors made an immediate impact, with Erinn Curtin opening the scoring in the very first minute. Cork maintained control throughout the first half, showcasing their strength and experience. Despite a determined effort from the Déise girls, they found themselves up against a well-drilled and clinical Cork side.
One of the standout moments of the match came midway through the second half when Cork’s corner-forward Amy Sheppard broke through the Waterford defence with a clear goal in sight. However, captain and goalkeeper Hayleigh Acheson produced two sensational back-to-back saves to deny the visitors a certain goal — a moment that drew huge applause from the home crowd.
Waterford rallied in the second half, finding a new rhythm and energy. Points from Kelsie Obanya, Rachel O’Brien, and Katelyn Lyons gave the team a much-needed lift and spurred on a spirited performance.
Although Cork continued to dominate possession and added to their lead, Waterford never gave up. They fought to the very end, showing real heart and commitment right up to the final whistle.
